The Rex Cinema

The Rex Cinema, constantly praised for its comfort, quality and aura, the cinema has a bar, armchairs and a stunning interior. The cinema originally opened in 1938, but started to see hard times in the early 70's. In 1973, renamed the Studio, the cinema became a bingo hall for half the week, until in 76 it was spilt into two cinemas, Rex1 and Rex2.

In 1988 however, after all efforts had failed, the cinema closed its doors for (seemingly) the last time. over the next 16 years, the cinema slowly fell into disrepair, with developers biting the bit to tear it and the flats that adjoin it down and "restore" it as a luxury office block.

The cinema had a break when a local journalist, James Hannaway put in a fictitious bid to get the developers to take notice, in order to persuade them into a joint venture, after numerous previous calls had been met with no response.

It Worked! The Rex reopened after a lot of work and effort, mostly done by James and his team, while the apartments were controlled by the developers, and the original foyer converted into a bar / restaurant (Now the Gatsby). The original Art-Deco interior was re-fitted and restored, leading to the breathtaking interior we see today!
