Malta : Mellieha Shelters

During WWII, Malta was the most bombed country. In the event of the sirens being sounded, citizens would rush to these public shelters.

Richer citizens were permitted to dig out their own rooms within the shelters, while communal rooms were the most common. The shelters contained a basic hospital, a chapel, and also housed the towns treasury in time of war. It was thought that the shelters was the most secure place for the valuables, and there were briefly used as a store for the local bank after the war finished until the bank was fully re-constructed.
