Hemel Hempstead Emergency Bunker
Built in 1966, The bunker, located underneath the local Civic Centre, has undergone a few minor modifications. The facility is still used by the council as the regional emergency control centre (informally abbreviated to RECC), with its most recent use being the explosions and subsequent fires at the Buncefield Oil Depot.
The bunker has 6 rooms, including a public-facing telephonists office, a RAYNET room, a PR office and the main 'operations' room. Originally the bunker was designed to hold 20 people, however now it is rarely used. The site still has its original air-conditioning and filtration devices in place, and the entire facility is routinely checked for readiness.
