Royston Cave

Royston Cave, as it's name may suggest, is in the small town of Royston, Hertfordshire. Rumoured to be used by the Knights templar, with symbolic carving covering the walls of the cave. The blurb states that the cave was most likely used as a meeting point for members of this illusive club. The entrance was discovered after a millstone was moved in the basement of the shop above, uncovering a large cave, upon which later inspection revealed the detailed carvings.

The present entrance to the cave is a later addition to comply with numerous H&S regulations, but the original entrance would have been foot holes in the wall, where members would have delicately lowered themselves to the supported platform. The cave was lit from a suspended lamp, lowered through a separate hole in the ceiling, lowered by the shopkeeper above.
